Bundy is a four piece post-punk band from Long Beach, California. They describe their music as “sadistically raw,
and despite it all still being filled with compassionate heart”. I found out about them after some of my college friends worked on their "Bastard Performer" music video. The band also uses their platform to promote other indie musicians. They interview other artists on Bundy the Podcast and lead singer Nani Serna created the music zine Rad Dog. The music video for their latest song “Enough to Know” premiered last week on Youtube. The new single and their previous albums are available for streaming on all digital platforms. Sunsets is a husband and wife duo made up of Danica and Chase Parker. Their pop songs remind me of Boys like Girls
and He Is We. They have beach aesthetic with their stage name and theme of their EP and social media graphics. They headlined their first show at Chain Reaction this past October. Sunsets' latest track pays tribute to the romantic comedies during the early 2000s. You can listen to “2005” and their self titled EP on Spotify. The indie rock trio follows a TV theme for their albums including the Pilot EP and Season 1. They are currently
working on Season 2 as they continue performing. I discovered Raised On TV when looking at the Silverlake Lounge calendar for one of my past internship assignments. What caught my attention is their fun energy and colorful visuals. Their latest music video “Smog City” premiered last month on the Rawkcus Magazine website. Raised on TV will be touring out of state in in July but you can catch their next LA show on May 12 at the The Mint! Katie Jo leads a country group and is currently working on her full length album with Big Ego Studios. She grew
up in Kansas before moving to California. I met her through my volunteer work at Sofar Sounds Long Beach. In her bio she says that she is “out to prove that modern country music should be played with just enough bite to last-and you don’t have to wear a big hat or beard to do it”. Her songs have beautiful melodies and emotional lyrics. Katie Jo &the Mijo's next album won’t be released until late 2019. Until then you catch their performance on May 5 at the Echo and listen to the 2018 EP Prairie Flower on Spotify. Endgame, the last of the Avengers films, just premiered. Though it isn’t the final of movie of Marvel Phase 3,
multiple character arcs are now wrapped. I think the film gave a satisfying ending before the next chapter begins. I enjoyed how it pays tribute to a lot of the previous installments. It displays the heroes’ growth through the 22 films while embracing classic moments. The audience may want to go back and re-watch those movies, especially if it has been a while since they’ve last watched them. While the three-hour run time may be daunting there’s not really any filler scenes. I thought the transitions were a lot smoother than Infinity War. There’s a good balance of humor and drama that you won’t realize how much time has gone by. Bonus things I liked about the movie were the surprise cameos and the soundtrack. Without giving anything away, I thought it helped tie the stories together and honor people who have not yet got on-screen recognition in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now we all know that some of the actors’ contracts have ended after filming Endgame. However I think there’s still some potential for them to return to the screen in some capacity regardless of what happens to their character. There’s definitely opportunities for guest appearances in Phase 4 movies (that are still TBA until enough time after Endgame has passed ) and the upcoming Disney Plus series. Marvel just announced some details about the “WandaVision (Scarlet Witch)” and “Hawkeye”. However the plot for “Loki” and “Falcon & Winter Soldier” have not yet been revealed. All of these characters will be reprised by the actors who portrayed them in the films. I have my theories on how Endgame ties into each show that are pretty similar to other fans' observations but if you haven’t seen it yet, you should stop reading now.
The Marvel Universe has always had unexpected twists and keeps you guessing. Here are my thoughts on what how the film setup the series premiering on Disney Plus.
I don’t believe Loki is dead...or at least the version we see in Endgame. Sure there needed to be some transition for Tony and Steve to travel to 1970 from 2012 but there are so many other ways they could have handled that. I don’t think Marvel would have decided to show past-Loki regaining the Tesseract unless it was significant. Even Tom Hiddleston seems to be pretty in the dark about the fate of the character even though he has confirmed to star in the series. At Ace Comic Con in Chicago when a little boy asked “Is Loki Really Dead?” he got nervous and simply said “Your guess is as good as mine”. The characters of Endgame discussed how time travel is very complicated. Nebula survived even though she shot her past self. Somehow Steve was able to reunite with Peggy without altering the current timeline. Though I’m sad to see reformed Loki gone, I think a series highlighting the trickster in his villainous ways is a more interesting plot. Now for the Falcon & Winter Soldier series, I think it will be about both of them taking over Captain America. The buildup from press conferences and Sebastian Stan interviews always made it seem that Bucky would take over. Yet it’s actually Sam who receives the shield when Steve decides to retire. Marvel could have changed their mind over the years on how to handle the plot. There are comic books showing both Falcon and Winter Soldier taking over for Steve individually. The movies have kept building the dynamic between these two characters so a series highlighting their friendship sounds pretty awesome. Whatever happens I’m very excited to see the new Disney Plus series and am very curious about which movies will be released in Phase 4!
Glowbird is another artist I found through the TRiP in Santa Monica. They are from San Fernando Valley and
perform at many venues in the Los Angeles area. The group describes their music as “introspective power-folk infused with lush guitar textures and vocal harmonies”. They remind me of the Lumineers and Mumford & Sons. Glowbird’s next show is under Westside Revival at Harvelle’s in Santa Monica on April 26. They will perform alongside other indies bands including The Revies and Vikinggo. While looking at the Hotel Cafe calendar, I found Victoria Canal’s profile. She is a twenty year old pop/soul
singer from London that currently resides in New York. Her style reminds me of Tori Kelly and Alessia Cara. Her goal is to inspire her audience to embrace who they really are through her songs. Aside from from her music she has done humanitarian work with Thankful.org and Autism Speaks. Victoria Canal is currently on her first headlining tour with a show at Hotel Cafe on April 18. Starting in May, she will be the opening act for the Michael Franti & Spearhead tour. I interviewed Manuel the Band when I created promotional content for Music Tastes Good. They were one
of the local bands performing and I’ve kept up with their work ever since. Their style reminds me of Jason Mraz and John Mayer. The rock jazz band is very grateful for their hometown of Long Beach for helping them launch. Some of their accomplishments include performing for Jam in The Van and winning the annual Surf City's Got Talent 2018 contest. The group’s latest single “Strong Independent Woman” is available on iTunes and Spotify. They have upcoming shows all over the Southern California including the Brix on Sunset and and Surf City Nights in Huntington Beach. Be sure the follow them on social media to keep up with all of their announcements! I met Honor Flow Productions when they performed at one of the Sofar Sounds Long Beach shows I volunteered for.
They definitely made a great first impression on a new crowd! Everyone was dancing and singing along. The trio is made up of DJ Chuck “The Old Soul”, ELIMN8, and DJISLORD. They say their work is “inspired by the melting pot of influences that is their hometown of Los Angeles”. Honor Flow Production’s first album The B.L.A.C.K Odyssey highlights a lot of these themes. The group is working on more videos and promos on their Youtube Channel. They have a few DJ Sets coming up at The Regent Theater on March 30 and ANM Theater at April 5. Riot Child is a girl duo from Stockholm, Sweden. They moved to Los Angeles to further their music career and
have since done shows for Universal City Walk and KROQ Locals Only. Their alternative pop/rock songs remind me of Paramore and Twenty One Pilots. Something unique about them is that they direct and do special effects for their own music videos, the latest being “Lithium”. They are currently on tour with Cherry Pools until mid-April. Check out their website to see when they will be performing near your city and to find their debut album Made For Another Time.
